Collecting My Thoughts

Summer is coming to a close here in Maryland, with kids going back to school today (for Kindergarteners and new students, at least). It’s been a crazy summer here, from the World Cup to Fanatics Fest to The National, and more.

We had birthday parties and went to the pool this weekend to wrap up the summer, and between kids playing with Pokémon cards, dads talking about collecting with their kids or themselves, and me having more conversations about cards this weekend than I have in a non-card show setting in a while.

Even I was a bit surprised by how many kids were playing or trading cards at the pool this weekend. Mostly because it is the pool, and I wasn't even crazy enough to take cards to the pool before I knew to protect my cards, but there were some boys playing Pokémon during adult swim.

I also heard about some friends who have gotten into collecting over the last month with their kids. My friends know I work for SCN and write about cards, and they know one of our friends has a big Joe Burrow collection, but I was stunned to hear that all the guys in our friend group at this birthday party were either collecting themselves or collecting with their kids. It was awesome to see.

More importantly, the kids were enjoying it. Sure, they just want base cards of their favorite players, but that’s how we all started at some point.
